Some investment professionals prefer to weight countries in a regional index by a variable other than market capitalization. MSCI provides regional indices that apply country weights based on gross domestic product (GDP) rather than market capitalization.
In many instances, a country's GDP weight is significantly different from its market capitalization weight.
