MSCI Hedge Fund Indices & Database
A robust performance measurement framework and research tool

MSCI Hedge Fund Indices

Comprising over 3,600 hedge funds and 190+ indices, the MSCI Hedge Fund Indices & Database provides a broad, reliable set of hedge fund indices and related data, enabling meaningful analyses of the hedge fund market.

The product was developed after consultation with hedge fund managers, fund-of-hedge-fund portfolio managers, and institutional investors globally. Participating hedge funds are classified by MSCI Barra analysts according to the MSCI Hedge Fund Classification Standard. Classification takes place following a dialog with the hedge fund manager and a close review of the fund's offering documents and marketing material.

The quality and completeness of the data provided in the MSCI Hedge Fund Indices & Database is paramount. MSCI Barra collects performance data directly from hedge fund managers and performs quality control checks. Performance information is updated monthly, with over 95% of the hedge fund participants reporting each month.

The MSCI Hedge Fund Indices & Database allows subscribers* to:

  • Perform peer-group comparisons and analyses
  • Conduct manager research
  • Pinpoint fund strategies more precisely via the MSCI Hedge Fund Classification Standard
  • Measure the performance of the hedge fund opportunity set
  • View index-level data, as well as detailed constituent fund information

*Among other requirements, subscribers must be "accredited investors" as defined in the United States Securities Act of 1933.
