MSCI Global Investable Market Indices
Integrated family of broad and global investable equity indices, segmented by size, style and industry
Following extensive consultations with investors worldwide that began in March 2006, MSCI Barra implemented enhancements to the methodology of its market-leading MSCI International Equity Indices in June 2007. The enhancements took into account international investors' evolving needs, by reflecting a broader and deeper investment opportunity set, segmented by size, style and industry.
The enhanced family of indices offers broader coverage of today's equity markets by having moved from a sampled approach to one that provides exhaustive coverage and non-overlapping market capitalization size segmentation.
- MSCI Global Standard Indices have been enhanced to exhaustively cover all investable large and mid cap securities by including approximately 85% of each market's free float-adjusted market capitalization*.
- MSCI Global Small Cap Indices have been enhanced by broadening the coverage to all companies with a market capitalization below that of the companies in the enhanced MSCI Global Standard Indices, and targeting up to 99% coverage of the free-float adjusted market capitalization in each market*. Small cap securities in the emerging markets are also represented in a set of MSCI Emerging Markets Small Cap Indices.
The MSCI Global Standard and MSCI Global Small Cap Indices are combined to form the MSCI Global Investable Market Indices, segmented by region/country, size (large, mid and small cap), value/growth styles and GICS® sectors/industries.
MSCI Global Investable Market Indices Methodology (June 2008)
The MSCI Global Value and Growth Indices are available for the large, mid, Standard (large + mid), small cap and investable market (large + mid + small) size segments.
In total over 28,000 new indices are now available, in addition to the MSCI Global Standard, Small Cap, and Value and Growth Indices.

The enhancements have been phased in over two stages on November 30, 2007 and May 30, 2008. Provisional Standard and Small Cap Indices that fully reflected the enhanced methodology were provided between June 2007 and June 2008 to enable clients to move to the enhanced methodology at a time convenient to them. They also added transparency to the transition and therefore helped to minimize its potential market impact.
